Identify a TAG Heuer From a Photo: Reference and Model Guide

TAG Heuer references are unusually helpful. The first letters of the code name the collection before you have read anything else: WBP points to Aquaracer, CBN and CBK to Carrera chronographs, WAZ and CAZ to Formula 1, CBL to Monaco and SBR to Connected. Add strong design families, from the square Monaco to the twelve-sided Aquaracer bezel, and most TAG Heuer watches can be placed quickly.

This page covers where to find the reference and serial on a TAG Heuer, how to decode the letters and digits, how to tell a pre-1985 Heuer from a TAG Heuer, and which visual cues separate the collections. Upload a photo and WatchID returns model and reference candidates you can check against the caseback.

Photo identification narrows the model. It does not authenticate the watch. Treat the result as a starting point for further checks, not as a certificate.

Where to find the reference number

TAG Heuer engraves both the reference and the serial number on the caseback. On a modern watch you will typically see the reference, such as WBP201A or CBK2110, on one line and an alphanumeric serial on another, either across the centre of a solid back or around the steel ring of a sapphire display back. Some references end with a suffix after a dot, for example WBP201A.BA0632, where the second part describes the bracelet or strap rather than the watch.

Watches from the 1990s and 2000s use shorter codes such as WK1110 or CV2010 together with a serial, often surrounded by text about water resistance. Pre-1985 Heuer watches carry three- or four-digit references engraved or stamped on the caseback, sometimes with a letter, and a separate serial.

The reference also appears on the warranty card. If you cannot read the engraving, a photo taken at an angle under a desk lamp usually brings it out. For the general logic of these codes, see our guide to watch reference numbers.

How to read a TAG Heuer reference

A TAG Heuer reference has three parts: a letter prefix, a block of digits and letters, and an optional strap code after a dot. The prefix is the useful bit. Its first letter broadly indicates the type of watch (W for three-hand models, C for chronographs, S for smart and some special lines) and the following letters identify the collection and generation.

PrefixCollectionExample
WBPAquaracer Professional 200 and 300WBP201A
WBNCarrera three-hand and dateWBN2110
CBNCarrera chronograph, Calibre Heuer 02CBN2A1B
CBKCarrera chronograph, Calibre 16CBK2110
WAZFormula 1 quartz three-handWAZ1010
CAZFormula 1 quartz chronographCAZ1010
CBL and CAWMonacoCBL2111
SBRConnectedSBR8A10

The digits and letters after the prefix separate sizes, dial colours and movements within a collection. The strap code after the dot follows its own logic: BA is generally a steel bracelet, FC a leather strap and FT a rubber strap. Two watches with the same prefix and digits but different strap codes are the same watch on different straps.

Serial numbers and dating

TAG Heuer serials are alphanumeric and are not published against production years, so there is no public table to look them up. Use the serial to match the watch to its card and to check that the caseback and papers agree. Dating comes from the brand name, the logo and the movement instead.

  • Heuer era (before 1985): dials read Heuer alone with the red and black Heuer shield. Techniques d'Avant Garde took control of the company in 1985, after which dials read TAG Heuer.
  • TAG Heuer era (1985 onwards): the shield carries TAG above Heuer. Collections such as the 2000 Series, Formula 1 and Link belong to this period.
  • Heritage reissues: since the 2010s the brand has released Autavia, Monaco, Carrera and Monza models with Heuer alone on the dial. A Heuer dial with a modern reference such as CBL2111 is a recent watch, not a vintage one.
  • Movements: Calibre 1887 arrived in 2010, Calibre Heuer 01 in 2015 and Calibre Heuer 02 in 2017; a watch with one of these cannot be older than that.

Visual cues by collection

Once you know the prefix system, the shapes fall into place.

  • Carrera: round case with faceted lugs and a clean dial. Chronographs carry two or three registers and often a tachymeter on the bezel or flange; three-hand versions keep a plain dial with a date. The 2023 Glassbox models have a domed sapphire with the tachymeter printed on an inner flange.
  • Aquaracer: a dive watch with a twelve-sided bezel, horizontal dial texture on many versions, a screw-down crown and 200 or 300 m on the dial.
  • Formula 1: sportier and usually quartz, with bold Arabic numerals, bright colour accents and, on many versions, a notched rotating bezel.
  • Monaco: square case, square sub-dials at 3 and 9 and, on Calibre 11 versions, the crown on the left side of the case.
  • Autavia: round case with a bidirectional rotating bezel and large luminous numerals, drawing on the 1960s original.
  • Link: integrated bracelet with S-shaped links that flow into the case.
  • Connected: a smartwatch with a digital display and a rotating crown; SBR and SBG references.

Common confusions and look-alikes

  • Heuer or TAG Heuer: the dial text is the first clue, but heritage reissues also read Heuer. Check the caseback: a modern alphanumeric reference and a sapphire back point to a recent watch.
  • Carrera or Aquaracer three-hand: the Aquaracer has a rotating twelve-sided bezel and a screw-down crown; the Carrera has a fixed, usually smooth bezel.
  • Formula 1 or Aquaracer quartz: the Formula 1 uses Arabic numerals and a simpler case, the Aquaracer applied indices and the twelve-sided bezel.
  • Carrera chronograph or Speedmaster and Daytona: the Carrera's faceted lugs and TAG Heuer shield separate it quickly. See our Omega and Rolex guides for their cues.
  • Same watch, different strap: WBP201A.BA0632 and the same prefix with an FT code are one model on a bracelet and on rubber, so compare prefixes and digits, not the full string.

TAG Heuer is widely counterfeited, particularly the Carrera and Aquaracer. Common tells in photos are chronograph hands that do not reset to zero, overly thick printing and casebacks without a crisp reference. Our guide to spotting a fake luxury watch covers the method.

Identifying a TAG Heuer from a photo

TAG Heuer's collections are visually distinct, so a photo usually lands on the right family at once and the reference candidates narrow from there. WatchID compares the case shape, bezel style, dial layout, sub-dial positions and bracelet with known TAG Heuer models.

  1. Photograph the dial straight on, with the chronograph hands at rest if it is a chronograph.
  2. Photograph the caseback with the engraved reference and serial in focus.
  3. Include the clasp or buckle; the strap code helps separate variants.
  4. Compare the suggested references with the engraving. The prefix and digits should match exactly.

Limits: a photo cannot distinguish a quartz Formula 1 from an automatic one when both share a dial design, and it cannot confirm the movement inside a Carrera. It also cannot tell an original dial from a replaced one. For a fuller walkthrough, read how to identify a watch from a photo. If the shield on the dial turns out to belong to another brand, the same photo tool covers it.

TAG Heuer identification FAQ

What do the letters at the start of a TAG Heuer reference mean?

They identify the collection and type. The first letter broadly separates three-hand watches (W) from chronographs (C) and smartwatches (S). The following letters name the family: WBP is Aquaracer Professional, CBN and CBK are Carrera chronographs, WAZ and CAZ are Formula 1, CBL and CAW are Monaco. The digits after the prefix separate sizes, dials and movements.

Where is the serial number on a TAG Heuer watch?

On the caseback, engraved alongside the reference. On solid backs it sits across the centre; on sapphire display backs it runs around the steel ring. The same serial should appear on the warranty card. TAG Heuer does not engrave serials between the lugs.

Is my watch a Heuer or a TAG Heuer?

Look at the dial and the caseback together. Watches made before the 1985 TAG acquisition read Heuer alone, with a three- or four-digit caseback reference. Watches after 1985 read TAG Heuer. Modern heritage reissues of the Autavia, Monaco and Carrera also read Heuer, but carry a modern alphanumeric reference such as CBL2111 and usually a sapphire caseback.

Can I find the year of my TAG Heuer from the serial number?

Not from the serial alone. TAG Heuer does not publish serial-to-year tables. You can bracket the age from the reference format, the logo and the movement: Calibre 1887 dates from 2010 onwards, Calibre Heuer 01 from 2015 and Calibre Heuer 02 from 2017. The warranty card gives the exact purchase date if you have it.

What does the code after the dot in a TAG Heuer reference mean?

It describes the bracelet or strap, not the watch. BA usually indicates a steel bracelet, FC a leather strap and FT a rubber strap, followed by digits for the specific design. WBP201A.BA0632 is therefore an Aquaracer Professional 300 on a bracelet. When identifying a watch, match the part before the dot.

How can I tell if my TAG Heuer is genuine from a photo?

A photo can flag problems such as misaligned sub-dials, chronograph hands that do not reset to twelve, poor printing or a caseback without a crisp reference, but it cannot confirm authenticity. Use WatchID to find the model and reference, then compare every detail with an official image and have the watch inspected by a watchmaker or TAG Heuer boutique.
